What is Amazon Renewed?

Amazon Renewed is the program for refurbished, pre-owned, and open-box products to be sold on Amazon.com. As part of this Amazon Renewed program, the products have to be inspected and tested to verify that they’re working and look like new by an Amazon qualified supplier. The renewed products have 90 days window to get a replacement or refund if the products are sold by Amazon.com and don’t work as expected. In short, any products on Amazon.com containing the word “renewed” in their title aren’t 100% new, but they are refurbished, pre-owned, and open-box items.

How to identify renewed products on Amazon.com?

On the product page, there are three main signs you can look at to identify whether it is a renewed item as listed below:

  1. Product title contains the word “Renewed”.

  2. Breadcrumb navigation shows the top category as “Amazon Renewed”.

  3. Amazon Renewed information appears above key product details.

For example, the TV below is a renewed product and you can identify based on those aforementioned signs. First, the product title (in a red rectangle) contains the word “Renewed”. Second, this breadcrumb navigation of this product (in an orange rectangle) shows that this product is within the “Amazon Renewed” department. Third, there is an Amazon Renewed information (in a blue rectangle) above the key product details on the product page.

Is the price for a renewed product always cheaper than a new product of the same kind?

No, sometimes a renewed product may have a higher price than a 100% new product of the same kind because product pricing on Amazon.com is determined by various factors such as demand, supply, and etc. So I recommend to check the price for both a renewed product and a new product before you buy since you may get a new product at an even cheaper price than a renewed product.
