The camera on the smartphone is one of the main selling points; some people even ask a question about whether we buy a phone or a camera. The rear camera of the smartphone is very competitive since flagship phones of 2024 are equipped with more than one camera and most of them have the ultra-wide angle lens. However, the selfie camera on the smartphone is another story. There aren’t a lot of smartphones in 2024 equipped with an ultra-wide angle front camera for a selfie that allows you to have a selfie with a group of people and still see a landscape in the background. Google has already started the trend with its Google Pixel 3 / 3 XL equipped with a 97° field of view (FoV) front camera in 2018 and it is one of the widest selfie cameras, but this model has been discontinued. The closest to this is a newly released Google Pixel 8 Pro, Google Pixel 8, and Google Pixel 7a equipped with a 95° FoV front camera. In 2024, apart from using the front camera, there are foldable phones with a super ultra-wide angle rear camera that can be used to take a selfie like Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5, Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5, and Google Pixel Fold

(Personal note: According to my testing, iPhone 15, iPhone 14, iPhone 13, and iPhone 12 series seem to have FoV of the front camera a little bit more than 80° when they are compared with the Samsung Galaxy S21 series.)

Since many phone manufacturers don’t disclose the FoV of their front camera, there is no FoV data for many smartphones. Thus, this best wide-angle front camera list is based on available data only. As there is more information, the list will be updated. In the meantime, enjoy the phone with wide selfie functionality!

Example of an Ultra-wide Selfie

To compare a regular wide selfie image and an ultra-wide selfie image, a good example is a selfie from Google Pixel 3 or Pixel 3 XL. You can see the group selfie mode from the ultra-wide selfie camera (right image below) can capture more people and landscapes in a single selfie shot than the regular selfie mode (left image below).
